Somaiya Guest Wi-Fi Usage Policy
1. Introduction
The Somaiya Guest Wi-Fi network is provided to guests of Somaiya Vidyavihar and Somaiya Vidyavihar University to facilitate internet access on the SVV campus. This network is part of the SVV Campus Network and is managed by the Information Technology Services (ITS) department.
2. Acceptable Use
Guests using the Somaiya Guest Wi-Fi network must comply with the following guidelines:
Ensure that their devices (computers, mobile phones, etc.) are properly configured and do not cause any inconvenience to other users on the Somaiya Guest Wi-Fi or SVV campus network.
The network can be used for both academic and non-academic purposes, provided it is governed by the general rules and regulations of the campus.
Setting up routing or other specialized network functions is strictly prohibited.
Excessive network traffic generation, such as broadcasting, sending massive messages, or unsolicited emails, is not allowed.
The development or deployment of any networking software on the Guest Wi-Fi network is prohibited.
Sharing account credentials or passwords with others is strictly forbidden.
3. User Responsibilities
Users are responsible for using the network in an ethical and legal manner, ensuring it is not detrimental to others.
Users must maintain proper licensing for all software installed on their devices. The use of non-licensed, pirated, or hacked software versions is strictly prohibited and will be subject to action under the IT Act 2023 and other applicable laws.
Users are accountable for all activities originating from their devices.
Users must ensure that their device security settings are appropriately configured to protect the network.
Users are entitled to access the internet and use applications such as email, FTP, Telnet, web browsing, etc.
4. Consequences of Policy Violations
Violations of this policy will result in the following consequences:
Temporary or permanent loss of access to the Somaiya Guest Wi-Fi network.
Immediate termination of access for severe violations, with the offense reported to the appropriate SVV/SVU authorities.

Legal actions, including:
Civil Penalties: Financial damages or compensation for any harm caused.
Criminal Charges: Prosecution under applicable laws, which may result in fines or imprisonment.
Employment Consequences: Disciplinary actions up to and including termination of employment.
Civil Litigation: Legal actions for breach of confidentiality and other relevant claims.
Any attempt to infiltrate or gain unauthorized access to the SVV/SVU network will lead to severe legal and penal actions.
5. ITS Staff Rights and Responsibilities
ITS staff is responsible for the design, operation, and management of the Somaiya Guest Wi-Fi network, including implementing necessary security measures.
In case of severe network issues originating from a user's device, the ITS staff has the right to disconnect the device without prior notice.
ITS staff will provide advance notice of any scheduled maintenance, upgrades, or changes affecting the Wi-Fi network, except in emergencies where immediate action is required to protect the network.
6. Data Collection and Retention Policy
In accordance with the Information Technology Act 2023 and compliance requirements, the ITS department will collect and retain certain data for up to one year. The data collected will include:
No personal data, such as usernames, passwords, or other personally identifiable information, will be collected, as prohibited by the IT Act 2023.
7. Compliance
All users must comply with this policy to ensure a secure and effective Wi-Fi environment. The University reserves the right to amend this policy as necessary.
